MIAMI (AP) MLB Baseball.

The ballpark fell silent as fans rose in alarm after a foul ball felled Florida Marlins rookie Logan Morrison in the on-deck circle.

Morrison wasn’t seriously hurt but left the game. His spot in the lineup was filled by recent minor league call-up Scott Cousins, who had fans standing again moments later, this time to cheer a wild victory.

A single by Cousins – his first hit as a big leaguer – drove in the winning run with none out in the 10th inning Sunday, completing a dramatic swing of emotions as the Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 7-6.

”Definitely a roller-coaster,” Cousins said. ”You go from, ‘Oh no, here’s one of our hottest bats in the lineup going down,’ to `This nobody just hit a walk-off.’ You can’t really describe that. It’s just crazy.”

Cousins was summoned after Emilio Bonifacio lined a foul that struck Morrison on the left cheek. Morrison’s helmet flew off and he collapsed face-down, but moments later he walked off the field accompanied by a trainer.

He was taken to a hospital, where X-rays were negative.

”He’s a tough kid. He wanted to keep playing,” said teammate Dan Uggla, the first player to reach Morrison. ”It’s as hard as I’ve seen anybody get hit in the face with a baseball. … It missed the eye, thank goodness.”

Following the game, Morrison accompanied the Marlins on their flight to Philadelphia. He said he hoped to play Monday against the Phillies, who trail Atlanta by one game in the NL East.

After Morrison was hurt, Bonifacio lined the next pitch for a leadoff triple against Eric O’Flaherty (3-2). Cousins, who made his major league debut Friday, batted for Morrison and became an improbable star when he lofted a deep fly over the head of left fielder Melky Cabrera.

The Marlins’ Wes Helms ran out to retrieve the ball as a souvenir for Cousins. Twenty minutes after the game, the rookie was still trying to absorb what he had done.

”I’m rounding second and my teammates are rushing out to greet me – I think that was one of the greatest feelings I’ve had in a long time,” Cousins said, his voice breaking with emotion. ”I don’t know if anybody really expected much out of me in that situation, but I did. Fortunately I was able to get the job done.”

The Braves overcame a 6-0 deficit and nearly went ahead. But with Florida up 6-4 in the sixth inning, a leaping Cameron Maybin reached above the center-field wall to rob Atlanta’s Nate McLouth of a grand slam.

”Maybin took a home run away, and that’s the ballgame,” Braves manager Bobby Cox said. ”If not for that, we win.”

Instead, the Marlins won when they ended a streak of 15 1-3 consecutive scoreless innings by the Atlanta bullpen.

”I could have made two better pitches,” O’Flaherty said. ”It’s very frustrating when you blow a game.”

Burke Badenhop (2-5) pitched a scoreless 10th for the Marlins, who will take a taxed bullpen into Monday’s doubleheader against the Phillies. Manager Edwin Rodriguez used four relievers, and two others – Leo Nunez and Brian Sanches – are nursing injuries.

Rodriguez said the team likely would call up a reinforcement from the minors.

The Braves tied the game with a bizarre five-run rally in the sixth that included three consecutive scratch singles, two bases-loaded walks and a two-run sacrifice fly by McLouth when Maybin made his sensational catch.

Braves starter Mike Minor lasted only four innings, the shortest outing in his five career starts. He allowed nine hits, eight for extra bases, and six runs to hike his ERA to 5.33. The damage would have been worse had he not picked off Maybin and Hanley Ramirez.

”I couldn’t spot my fastball,” Minor said. ”And my curveball was terrible.”

Alex Sanabia held Atlanta to one hit over the first 4 1-3 innings but failed to get an out in the sixth. He gave up six hits and five runs.

Ramirez drove in three runs, hit his 20th homer and extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

NOTES: Braves RHP Derek Lowe, who skipped a scheduled start for the first time in his career Friday because of right elbow pain, played catch Sunday and said he felt better after receiving a cortisone shot. He plans to throw in the bullpen Monday and said he expects to make his scheduled start Wednesday at Pittsburgh. … Rain delayed the game for 23 minutes in the bottom of the fifth inning. … Marlins rookie Mike Stanton, who struck out pinch-hitting, is 1 for 30 against the Braves this season with 16 strikeouts. … Cox gave Troy Glaus a start at 1B, resting Derrek Lee. … Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman singled in the ninth for his first major league hit.

SEATTLE (AP) MLB Baseball.

Mitch Talbot is hoping to finish the season with a flourish after going through a rough stretch the past two months.

Talbot pitched into the seventh inning to help the Cleveland Indians beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2 on Saturday night.

”It was nice to see Talbot come back and have a good outing,” Indians manager Manny Acta said. ”He’s been struggling a little bit since he came back from the DL and tonight he was very good. Threw a lot of first pitch strikes.”

Talbot (9-11) allowed an unearned run and five hits in 6 2-3 innings to pick up his first win since June 27. The right-hander was 0-5 with a 6.23 ERA in his previous nine starts.

Talbot was placed on the disabled list on July 30 with a back strain and had struggled since he returned three weeks ago. But the solid effort against the Mariners left him optimistic for the final part of the season.

”Just locating pitches,” Talbot said. ”Plain and simple. Executing pitches. I think I kept them off balance pretty well.”

Indians starters have allowed three runs or fewer in nine of the last 10 games.

”It was very nice to continue that especially because our bullpen was beat up in our last homestand,” Acta said. ”That helps those guys get back in order.”

Michael Brantley and Shin Soo-Choo each had two hits and drove in a run for the Indians. Travis Hafner and Asdrubal Cabrera had RBI singles.

Cleveland pushed across two runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Cabrera and Choo ended a run of four consecutive hits by the Tribe back-to-back RBI singles off David Pauley (2-7).

”That was story of the game,” Pauley said. ”Ground ball through the hole. Ground ball through the hole so sometimes, being a ground ball pitcher, they go to people and sometimes they don’t.”

Brantley tacked on another run-scoring single in the fourth, driving in Jason Donald.

Ichiro Suzuki, Russell Branyan and Casey Kotchman had two hits apiece for Seattle. Suzuki singled in a run with two outs in the seventh and Branyan led off the eighth with his 22nd homer.

”It seemed like he got ahead of our guys,” Mariners manager Daren Brown said of Talbot. ”Stayed ahead and more that anything, kept the ball down. We didn’t square up a lot of balls against him.”

Chris Perez struck out Matt Tuiasosopo with runners on second and third to end the eighth, then finished for his 18th save of the season. It was his fourth save of more than an inning.

”It felt good to get out of that jam in the eighth,” Perez said. ”Mitch pitched a great game and it would have been a shame if we blew it.”

NOTES: Mariners CF Franklin Gutierrez was scratched because of an illness. Michael Saunders replaced him in the starting lineup. … Indians pitcher Justin Masterson will miss Sunday’s start to attend to a family matter. Jeanmar Gomez will replace him.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) MLB Baseball.

Max St. Pierre’s perseverance has paid off. The Detroit Tigers have added an awfully happy backup catcher.

The 30-year-old rookie was brought up to the big leagues on Wednesday after 14 seasons – spanning 978 games – in the minors. His next at-bat – and manager Jim Leyland promised he’d get one – will be his first in the majors.

”I’m still like dreaming, I feel like,” St. Pierre said in the visitors’ clubhouse at Target Field before Detroit’s game against the Twins. He was taken out of Tuesday’s game with Triple-A Toledo and told of the long-awaited promotion.

He slept for one hour. That was one flight he didn’t want to miss.

Oh, and all those messages on his cell phone?

”Out of control, and I’m enjoying it,” St. Pierre said. ”I feel important. I’m always feeling important with my friends, but there’s so much support behind me.”

Asked if he was eager to start using that big league meal per diem, St. Pierre looked as if he’d never considered it.

”It’s never been about the money,” he said. ”It’s always been about … a dream. I want to get there, and I want everybody back home to see: ‘Hey, you made it.”’

Back home is Canada, French-speaking Quebec to be exact, where St. Pierre didn’t start playing baseball until he was 9 or 10 years old. He said it took him an entire year to make contact. But once he did, when that ball went scooting along the gravel, through the second baseman’s legs and past the center fielder for a classic Little League home run, he was hooked.

He became a big fan of Tim Wallach and later Larry Walker of the Montreal Expos, channeling the passion into developing his game enough to get drafted as a 17-year-old in the 26th round by the Tigers in 1997.

His defense is what kept him going, with 11 homers and 54 RBIs for Double-A Erie in 2003 his most productive offensive season. He hit only .236 that year, and his career batting average is .250.

But in the majors, of course, it’s still .000.

”Everybody’s happy for him. He’s going to play at some point. I’ll get him in there,” Leyland said.

Leyland never made it to the majors after a six-year career in the minors that ended in 1970. It took him until 1986 to become a major league manager, with Pittsburgh. So he knows all about that perseverance stuff.

”If it works for Max like it worked out for me, it’ll be all right,” Leyland said.

English is St. Pierre’s second language, so he had trouble fully communicating with pitchers earlier in his career. He’s had plenty of ups and downs with his offense, too, until clicking this season. He batted .300 with five homers and 22 RBIs in 130 at-bats for Toledo.

He said he wasn’t about to quit if the call didn’t come this year, but he did acknowledge a desire to find another organization next season if he didn’t make it this year. He’s been in the Tigers’ system the entire time, making it to Triple-A for one game in 2002 and then a full season in 2006. Since then, he’s been back and forth between Double-A and Triple-A.

The Tigers also recalled right-handed reliever Robbie Weinhardt from Toledo. Weinhardt was 1-1 with a 1.57 ERA in 24 games for the Mud Hens. This is his second call-up of the season. Right-handed reliever Enrique Gonzalez, who was designated for assignment last week, was sent outright to Toledo.

Hunter Pence hit a three-run homer and the Houston Astros completed a sweep of St. Louis with a 5-2 victory Wednesday, handing the slumping Cardinals their fifth straight defeat.

The fading Cardinals, who have lost 13 of 16, began the day seven games behind first-place Cincinnati in the NL Central. The Reds were scheduled to host Milwaukee later.

Nelson Figueroa (4-2) pitched out of two bases-loaded jams and lasted five innings for the win. Brandon Lyon worked a perfect ninth for his 11 save in 12 chances, sealing Houston’s 14th victory in 20 games.

Shut out 3-0 the previous two nights, St. Louis snapped an 18-inning scoreless streak on Matt Holliday’s 24th homer in the first for a 2-0 lead.

Jeff Suppan (1-7) was activated from the disabled list before the game and allowed only one hit until the Astros rallied in the fifth.

Brett Wallace drew a leadoff walk and went to third on Jason Castro’s double. Pinch-hitter Brian Bogusevic hit a grounder to first baseman Albert Pujols, who threw out Wallace at the plate. Michael Bourn hit a sacrifice fly and Jeff Keppinger walked before Pence’s go-ahead homer.

Bourn singled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. He scored on Carlos Lee’s sacrifice fly.

Figueroa escaped a jam in the third, when Suppan led off with a walk and Skip Schumaker singled. Aaron Miles and Pujols flied out and Figueroa hit Holliday with a pitch to load the bases before Jon Jay grounded into a force play.

St. Louis loaded the bases again in the fifth on singles by Miles and Jay and an intentional walk to Holliday with two outs. Ex-Astro Pedro Feliz flied out to end the threat.

Figueroa allowed two runs and six hits. Five relievers combined to hold the Cardinals to one hit over the final four innings.

Schumaker doubled to start the game but was thrown out on the bases when Miles hit a comebacker to Figueroa. Pujols, hitless in his last 13 at-bats, fouled out before Holliday’s homer.

The Cardinals have scored two runs in their last 36 innings. The consecutive shutouts the previous two nights marked the first time in 94 years that St. Louis had been blanked with three hits or fewer in back-to-back games.

Suppan made his first start since Aug. 1, when he pitched 5 1-3 scoreless innings against the Phillies. He went five innings and allowed four runs, three hits and four walks.

Notes: The Cardinals called up outfielder Nick Stavinoha and catcher Matt Pagnozzi from Triple-A Memphis. They also activated left-hander Dennys Reyes from the disabled list. Keppinger (toe injury) came off the disabled list before the game. … Lee is among the major league leaders with 30 RBIs since July 28.

Back to frighten pitchers who haven’t seen him regularly in a few years, Manny Ramirez will try to get the Chicago White Sox back to the playoffs.

As expected, the White Sox claimed the unpredictable but productive 12-time All-Star slugger on waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, hoping his powerful bat, full of so many October swings and homers, can help them make a postseason push.

”Hopefully, he can come in here and give us some help,” White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko said. ”We need to make up some ground. There’s no doubt Manny can hit. He makes any team better.”

Chicago began a key 10-game road trip to Cleveland, Boston and Detroit on Monday night, although Ramirez is not expected to join the White Sox, his fourth major league team, until Tuesday. They began the day 4 1/2 games behind first-place Minnesota in the AL Central.

The 38-year-old Ramirez returns to the AL after spending parts of three seasons in Los Angeles, a stay that ended on a somewhat sour note. He batted .311 with eight homers and 40 RBIs in 66 games with the Dodgers this season, but was on the disabled list from July 20 to Aug. 20 with a right calf strain and missed 33 games.

His first appearance for Chicago will come against the lowly Indians, the team that drafted him and enjoyed his production for eight seasons. He’ll then head to Fenway Park, where he was adored by Boston fans before he was traded to the Dodgers in 2008.

That summer, he hit .396 with 17 homers, propelling LA to a postseason berth.

Is Manny really an upgrade for the White Sox? Ken Rosenthal offers his thoughts on Ramirez and the trade.

The past two years haven’t gone as well. Ramirez was slapped with a 50-game suspension after a failed drug test last year. This season, he has been slowed by leg injuries, which led to the Dodgers deciding to part ways with him for nothing in return.

Ramirez’s salary is $20 million in the final season of a two-year contract, but only $5 million is due this year, with the rest to be paid over the next three years. He also had a full no-trade clause.

The White Sox were awarded a waiver claim on Ramirez last week, giving them until 1:30 p.m. EDT on Tuesday to complete a trade with the Dodgers.

In Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen’s lineup, Ramirez will likely serve as the designated hitter and bat somewhere behind former Indians teammate Omar Vizquel. With 554 career homers, Ramirez will fit nicely into a batting order that already has Konerko, Alex Rios and Carlos Quentin.

”He’s a Hall of Fame hitter,” Konerko said as his teammates snacked and watched TV in the visitor’s clubhouse at Progressive Field. ”But just because we have him, we can’t ignore the other aspects of the game. We’ve got to play defense, we’ve got to pitch. He’s a great piece to have but we can’t let down anywhere else.”

A fan favorite when he arrived in Los Angeles, Ramirez left with little splash. He hadn’t started a game since Wednesday at Milwaukee. And in his final game with the Dodgers, he was ejected as a pinch-hitter after arguing a called strike on the only pitch he saw in Sunday’s 10-5 loss at Colorado.

What impact will Manny have on rest of White Sox’s season? He’ll put them in the playoffsHe won’t make differenceHe and Ozzie will get reality TV show.

When he got to Los Angeles, Ramirez’s reputation for being unpredictable made him an instant celebrity in the land of celebrities. He had a section of seats named in his honor at Dodger Stadium, where wigs imitating his dreadlocks became fashionable.

”Mannywood” was the place to be, and the star attraction put on a show.

He played so well down the stretch that he wound up with a two-year, $45 million contract from the Dodgers, but the injuries and failed drug test dampened his stay. Ramirez stopped talking to reporters in the spring, after he said this will be his final season in Los Angeles.

For the White Sox, who finished third in their division last year, Ramirez is a low-risk gamble with a potentially high reward.

If Manny is no longer Manny, they can simply let him go as a free agent at the end of the season.

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (AP) MLB Baseball.

Vladimir Guerrero hit a tiebreaking homer and a patchwork bullpen made that hold up over the last three innings, giving the Texas Rangers a 4-3 victory over Minnesota as C.J. Wilson won his sixth consecutive decision.

”Just the wolfpack, they came in there and just everybody took a bite; it was pretty cool,” Wilson said of the five relievers who finished the game. ”Every single guy stepped up. It was awesome.’

Wilson (13-5) already had thrown his last pitch Wednesday night when Guerrero led off the sixth with a homer on a night when the AL West-leading Rangers were without closer Neftali Feliz, who had worked three straight games, and primary setup man Frank Francisco (cortisone shot).

Michael Kirkman pitched a scoreless seventh in his second major league appearance before Darren O’Day and Darren Oliver each struck out the only batter they faced. Alexi Ogando allowed a hit and struck out two before Matt Harrison got the final two outs for his first pressure save.

”It’s nice to see how they handled it. They had to handle it,” Manager Ron Washington said.

”Ronnie’s got to be tired over there,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. ”But you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, mix and match as best you can. He’s got a lot of good arms that he can trust.”

Guerrero had three hits, including the tiebreaking homer leading off the sixth against Brian Duensing (7-2). Josh Hamilton also homered for the Rangers.

Wilson gave up three runs with six strikeouts and two walks while throwing 103 pitches over six innings. The left-hander is 6-0 with a 2.29 ERA in eight starts since the All-Star break.

As pennant races heat up, keep track of which team is leading each division.

”He throws hard and has a good cutter,” said Jason Kubel, who had a double and scored an unearned run against Wilson. ”He has several pitches so you can’t just sit on one.”

While Wilson has been starting for the Rangers all season, Duensing is also a left-handed reliever turned starter. Duensing had been 4-0 in his first six starts since moving into Minnesota’s rotation July 23.

”I had a couple pitches that Hamilton and Vladdy made me pay for,” Duensing said. ”If I make a different pitch, maybe it’s a different ballgame.”

Duensing struck out five and walked one in six innings, the first time he lost when pitching that long. He was 7-0 his previous nine games in his career when he pitched at least six innings.

Texas has won four in a row, including the first three in the four-game set against Minnesota, and maintained an 8 1/2-game lead over Oakland in the AL West. The Twins stayed 3 1/2 games up in the AL Central after the Chicago White Sox lost to Baltimore.

Guerrero also had an RBI single, marking only the second time in 21 games that he had multiple RBIs. The other multi-RBI game in that span was Sunday when he had a three-run shot, his only other homer in August. Guerrero has 23 homers, but only three the last 38 games.

”I’m going to keep writing his name in the lineup until I decide to give him a day off because I know at any minute he can make a difference,” Washington said. ”Tonight he made a difference.”
.
Hamilton’s 30th homer, and fourth in five games, was a two-run shot in the first.

It is the second 30-homer season for Hamilton, who leads the majors with a .356 batting average. He is 10 for 25 the past six games after a 1-for-16 slide the five games before that.

”Josh is doing all right,” Michael Young said with a smile. ”It’s a lot of fun to be his teammate right now and get to enjoy the show up close.”

While it was the second save for Harrison, his other was when he pitched the final three innings in a 13-3 victory over Pittsburgh on June 23.

”It was definitely test for me to go out there and be put in that situation, and know they had the confidence in me to get the job done,” said Harrison, the last available pitcher. ”I was the closer, slash long reliever.”

The Twins got even at 3-all in the fifth on Denard Span’s run-scoring double and an RBI groundout by Joe Mauer, who tied the game even though he went 0 for 3 against Wilson and is 1 for 17 in his career against the Rangers left-hander.

Valencia had three hits for the Twins and drove home Kubel with a groundout in the second.

Jim Thome was scratched from the starting lineup because of soreness in his right thigh from getting hit by a fastball in the upper 90s as a pinch-hitter Tuesday night. He came on as a pinch-hitter in the eighth and struck out swinging at a 98-mph fastball by Ogando to end the inning.

NOTES: Rangers SS Elvis Andrus was 0 for 4, ending his 14-game hitting streak that was the longest active in the majors. … The gametime temperature was a pleasant 78 degrees. It was 100 degrees for the first pitch two nights earlier.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) MLB Baseball.

Pat Burrell stopped on his way to the shower and pulled Pablo Sandoval into a celebratory Panda hug.

”Come on, baby,” Burrell said.

It’s taken a calculated combination of Giants new, like Burrell, and Giants old, like ”Kung Fu Panda” Sandoval, to put San Francisco back in the thick of the playoff chase.

Sandoval homered and drove in four runs while showing signs his swing is finally back on track, Buster Posey hit a three-run homer and the Giants routed the Cincinnati Reds for the second straight game with a 16-5 victory Tuesday night.

”Panda’s back,” Andres Torres said. ”That’s the Pablo, the Panda, I know.”

The victory gave the Giants their first series win in their last four, all against contending teams.

Torres hit a pair of two-run doubles for a career-high four RBIs as San Francisco followed an 11-2 win Monday with a season high in runs to move into a first-place tie with the Phillies for the NL wild card. The NL Central-leading Reds remained 2 1/2 games up on the Cardinals after St. Louis lost at Pittsburgh.

Juan Uribe added a two-run homer, Freddy Sanchez had a solo shot while getting four hits for the second straight night, and newly acquired Cody Ross contributed two singles and an RBI in his first start with the Giants.

”It’s true, man, hitting’s contagious,” Giants first baseman Aubrey Huff said.

Torres doubled in the fourth and the sixth. San Francisco scored 11 or more runs in consecutive games for the first time since June 27-28, 2000, at Colorado — and the first time at home since Sept. 2-3, 1973.

”They beat us up good,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. ”Any time we posed a threat and got close, they ran it up on us again.”

Scott Rolen hit at two-run homer for Cincinnati and Brandon Phillips had a pair of solo homers for his sixth career multihomer game and first of the season. It was the 12th multihomer game by a Reds player in 2010.

San Francisco took a nice lead in the first for the second straight game, getting Ross’ single off Travis Wood (4-2) and then a two-run single by Sandoval. The Panda added an RBI double in the fifth and is showing signs of getting on track after a season-long funk. He received a standing ovation when he reached second on the double, then topped that with a sixth-inning homer.

Sandoval said he takes a deep breath each time he steps into the batter’s box. Something sure is working.

”Every at-bat I calm myself down, relax,” he said. ”It’s just being comfortable at home plate.”

The Giants grabbed a 5-0 lead in the first inning. They had 17 hits in the game and 18 Tuesday, the club’s first back-to-back games with 17 or more hits since July 8-9 1993, at Philadelphia.

All this offense after being shut out 9-0 in Sunday’s series finale at St. Louis and scoring seven total runs against the Cardinals.

”The ball was flying,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ”We’ve had some good at-bats the last two nights.”

San Francisco starter Jonathan Sanchez was staked to a big lead but didn’t last the five innings he needed to be eligible for the win. Santiago Casilla (5-2) pitched two innings for the victory.

Wood, the Reds’ 23-year-old rookie left-hander, had won his previous four starts with a 2.19 ERA, but lasted only four innings in this one. He was trying to become the first Reds rookie to win five straight starts since Tom Browning in 1985.

Phillips and Rolen each connected in the fifth, when the Reds nearly cleared the fences a third time. Left fielder Pat Burrell made a leaping catch at the top of the fence to rob Jonny Gomes of what would have been his 100th career home run.

”It became a two-possession game there toward the end,” said Rolen, who flied out to end the sixth with the bases loaded.

Cincinnati was without center fielder Jim Edmonds and left fielder Laynce Nix after both were injured in Monday’s loss. Edmonds went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique, while Nix was listed as day to day with a sprained left ankle.

Chris Valaika, recalled from Triple-A Louisville earlier in the day, became the eighth Reds player to make his major league debut this year. He singled in his first career at-bat in the sixth.

Giants reliever Ramon Ramirez was warming up in the bullpen in the fifth when he fielded the ball on Drew Stubbs’ sharp grounder down the left-field line, unaware the ball was fair. It was a ground-rule double. Baker came out to discuss the play with the umpires.

Notes: Baker, back in the Bay Area where he began as a manager with the Giants from 1993-2002, is still weighing an offer of a multiyear contract extension from Cincinnati. … Ross played RF and batted fifth in his first start for the Giants since being awarded to them off a waiver claim from the Marlins on Sunday. … The Reds are considering skipping RHP Edinson Volquez’s next turn in the rotation after he lasted only 2-3 of an inning Monday. Pitching coach Bryan Price has worked up a couple of scenarios with an off day Thursday and also Sept. 2. … Cincinnati won its first two series on this West Coast swing, at Arizona and Los Angeles.

Matt Garza is so focused on getting Tampa Bay back into the postseason that even a questionable balk call couldn’t knock the Rays’ righty out of his groove.

Garza shrugged off his lone mistake of the afternoon that led to Oakland’s only run against him and pitched into the eighth inning for his career-high 13th win, leading Tampa Bay to a 3-2 victory over the Athletics on Sunday.

Garza (13-7) scattered four hits over 7-2/3 innings and came out on top in a matchup between pitchers who threw no-hitters this season. Oakland’s Dallas Braden, who threw a perfect game against the Rays on May 9, allowed only four hits — but three runs.

“You’re going to get upset, (but) I didn’t think I was in the wrong,” said Garza, who had three strikeouts and three walks. “I had to keep going and couldn’t let that bother me. I really had to go after guys.”

Evan Longoria hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the sixth as the Rays secured a split of the four-game series. Carl Crawford singled twice and scored for the Rays, who remained one game behind the New York Yankees in the AL East.

Garza went into a mini-tailspin after no-hitting Detroit on July 26 and lost two of his next three starts. He’s rebounded nicely since, pitching seven scoreless innings to beat Texas on Tuesday then handcuffing Oakland on Sunday.

The right-hander cruised through the first four innings, allowing only a pair of singles, before briefly losing control and composure in the fifth.

After the A’s loaded the bases with one out on a single, walk and error, home plate umpire James Hoye called a balk on Garza, forcing in Landon Powell with the tying run. A visibly frustrated Garza walked to home plate with his arms wide apart and talked briefly with Hoye before going back to the mound where he was met by shortstop Jason Bartlett, who tried to calm his teammate down.

2010 NO-HITTERS
This season has been the year of no-hitters. Take a look back at all of the pitching gems.
It worked. Garza retired the next two A’s to get out of the jam then settled into another groove before leaving with a runner on and two outs in the eighth.

“That was a big moment,” Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. “Garza is emotional and I thought he held it together pretty well because I ran out there quickly. I was impressed with his ability to be able get a strikeout against a good hitter.”

This marked the second time this season and the third time in 20 years that two pitchers have faced each other after throwing no-hitters earlier in the year. Arizona’s Edwin Jackson and Roy Halladay of Philadelphia pitched against each other July 28.

Braden (8-9) lost for only the second time in six starts.

“They’re still the potent lineup they’ve been,” Braden said. “I don’t see any need for them to stray from their approach. We didn’t win so (I) wasn’t good enough, period.”

Joaquin Benoit recorded one out while Rafael Soriano struck out Cliff Pennington with the tying run on second in the ninth for his 37th save in 39 tries. The 37 saves tie Soriano with San Diego’s Heath Bell for most in the majors.

Braden didn’t get much support from his teammates. The A’s, who were held to one hit by Toronto’s Shaun Marcum on Monday before going on a four-game winning streak, didn’t get a runner to second base after the fifth inning.

Kelly Shopach’s RBI double in the third gave the Rays a 1-0 lead. After Garza’s balk tied the score, Tampa Bay scored twice off Braden in the sixth. Bartlett walked and Crawford singled before Longoria’s two-run double.

Tampa Bay scored its first run in the second after Sean Rodriguez hit a leadoff single and scored on Shoppach’s double to right-center.

Powell and Gabe Gross had two hits apiece for the A’s.

NOTES: All-Star closer Andrew Bailey pitched the ninth inning after being reinstated from the disabled list. Bailey had been sidelined with a right intercostal strain. RHP Ross Wolf was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento to make room. … The only other time two pitchers faced one another after throwing no-hitters was on Sept. 6, 1991, when Texas’ Nolan Ryan and Wilson Alvarez from the Chicago White Sox squared off. … Crawford has hit safely in 12 of 13 games since moving into the No. 3 spot in Tampa Bay’s lineup. … A’s pitchers have allowed five runs or fewer in each of their last 21 games, the longest streak in the AL since Baltimore in 1997.
